More names In my last post I looked at the interesting variety of animal names used as place names. This week we are going to have a look at some of the place names that tell a story of the how the name came to be and others that will leave you wondering. Some were obviously as a result of a struggle often against nature or against man even, in some cases like Moordenaars Hoek. I bet that there is an interesting tale behind that name. Others are happy and joyful like Wel Van Pas. Having tasted their wines, I think the name Weltevrede is very fitting in more ways than one. Mooiuitsig has a fantastic view. A name that has long intrigued me was Jan Harms Gat but that has turned to be a corruption of the original name, Jan Harmansz Schat(treasure). Not as exciting as I thought. Now Dansters Kraal tells a simple enough story. Gouverments Leegte lead to a bit of head scratching. It turns out that when farms were granted in the early days the plot was determined by walking a set distance often half an hour in various directions effectively creating a rough circle. When the farms were surveyed many years later, the small parcels between the roughly shaped farms became government property, hence Gouverment Leegte. Goree turns out to be a abbreviation of Goederheede for a good reason, I suppose.
